Police investigate possible hate crimes
March 22, 2007
BOWIE (Special) - Bowie police are investigating what they are calling "hate crimes" related to two cases of criminal mischief.
The first complaint was made March 11 by Brent Austin. Investigator Guy Green said Austin called police after someone carved into the paint on his car epitaphs, including, "stay and die, get out KKK." The image of a person hanging in a noose also was carved into the paint.

Police originally filed this case as a criminal mischief, but a second incident occurred early Saturday. Austin and his three children were awakened about 1:30 a.m. when a landscaping brick was thrown into the window of the home. The second vandalism included spray painting of Austin's vehicle and garage with racial slurs.
Green reported someone had taken a baby doll, painted it black and hanged it from a cord like a noose on the front porch.
Because of the nature of the incidents, they are being investigated as hate crimes. Austin is a white man, who is married to a black woman. His wife, who is in the military, is stationed in Korea.
"I don't understand how people could do something like this in 2007," Green said, "especially with children in the house."
Bowie Police ask anyone with information about these incidents to call 872-2251.
City of Bowie Economic Development Coordinator Susan Campbell said the city leadership is working to ensure the city's image is not tarnished for its entire community because of the actions of a few.
Campbell, who has lived in Bowie for eight years, said the incident brings extreme disappointment and shock.
"We want people to know that this action does not represent the majority of our residents," she said. "We want people to visit, do business and live here."
